Mk1-John Boultbee Brooks jacket

The BROOKS at it again. We just got a word that Brooks will be releasing soon the very first item under their new label – John Boultbee. The Criterion Mk.1 Jacket is the first in a line of what will soon be regarded as the world’s finest jackets for cycling, carrying the label John Boultbee, not to mention the fact that behind it stands Brooks name, and all which that implies. The outer surface of the John Boultbee Criterion Mk. 1 is Ventile, a waterproof and windproof treated woven cotton textile designed in England during the Second World War for use in pilot’s suits.  Ventile is also popular among birdwatchers and naturalists because is produces almost no noise when in use.  Cyclists entering classrooms, movie theaters, or meetings behind schedule will appreciate this feature. MagGyver would be proud

Meet Fritz Rice an urban MagGyver from Dutch Bike Seattle who managed to come up with a simple but working solution to a shortage of snow tires in Seattle. Solution to all his snow riding problems are … zip ties. It just works, zip ties dig nicely into the snow and they are thin enough not to bounce bike around at slow speed.

He also says that idea wasn’t his but some fixed gear rider came up with it first. Thank god we do not have to worry about it in Florida.

Another cyclist fallen

The cycling community had a devastating tragedy on Friday, 17 December 2010. On an overnight ride around the island of Oahu with 30-40 other cyclists, Zachary Manago, was killed by a hit-and-run driver at 11:10pm. Though he only began riding this year, Zach was extremely enthusiastic about cycling and had a great positive attitude and a smile that was contagious. In memory of Zach, the weekly Tuesday Night Ride on the 21st was dedicated to him.. aptly renaming it ZNR or Zachary Night Ride. Over 90 people showed up on bicycles to ride the weekly route that he was so enthusiastic about attending every week. On the 23rd, a ghostbike was implemented at the scene of the accident.

Because it was a hit-and-run, the driver of the vehicle was not identified. Friends cycling with Zach recalled seeing a white SUV or pickup truck that they suspected was the vehicle involved in the crash. A few bike friends took the initiative to search for the vehicle in the area. One thing about living on an island: vehicles and people can’t hide for too long. By an amazing stroke of luck, friends located the vehicle in a covered carpark with evidence of the crash still intact on the SUV. For more info click here.

Ignoble Mona Cocoon Backpack

There is a new backpack on a market from Ignoble. Though it is their first-ever backpack, we do love the design and shape of it. This backpack sold as Mona Cocoon Backpack and is constructed from ultra-durable, ultra-sleek materials, with a 230t nylon exterior, YKK branded nylon zipper closures and nylon herringbone trim. The bag is lined and features padded straps, a padded airmesh back, a front vertical stash-pocket, a small hood stash-pocket, and a large main compartment with internal hanging-pocket and book-sleeve. We didn’t get a chance to get our hands on this nice looking backpack but it does have some impressive specs and a nice design.

Chopper style fixed gear?

I guess this is the next development in the fixed gear bikes. Looks like a German company called riot-cycles makes this custom fixed gear chopper look alike. Here is more on their Facebook.

Quad Fixed Prototype

Here is an interesting quad fixed prototype.

News release:

“It was only a matter of time ‘till we put pen to paper & drafted up the first ever Quad Fixed frame. What you see here is #1 of one. Strictly prototype & still in the development stage. This frame was handed off to Marwin “The Wizard” Ou last night. Marwin will be riding & testing it on the streets & skateparks of the LBC in the coming months. We have not yet decided if we will bring the Quad Fixed frame into SE’s 2012 line of bikes. So for now, just consider it our little pet project. If you like what you see, keep an eye out on the SE website (www.SEBIKES.com) and SE’s Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/SEBIKES) for the frame’s progress.”
