We wrote while back about a belt drive bike and seems like there are more and more of those popping up in Europe. Here is one from Schindelhauer. Nice clean white design, but again… I do have a weakness for a white bike. Gates carbon belt drive looks intriguing, also, quick switch from fixed to single speed is a plus. I wonder if belt drive feels any different from the regular chain setup. So far these type of bikes are pretty expensive since tech of it is still pretty new.
New Bertelli track framesets became available for sale at www.bertellibici.com this month . Old School lugged steel frame, real track geometry and very clean: no stickers, no bottle holes, no brake hole, just nice and clean. Price: $549.00 plus shipping…
Everyone wants to get out and ride, but not everyone has an abundance of extra cash sitting around to grab the latest and greatest Fixie/single speed bike. So what to do? Well we decided to take Walmart up on its Mongoose Single Speed bike offer. Coming in at a reasonable $149.99 would this bargain prices bike give us the performance and satisfaction we were looking for? Let’s find out in Part 1 of our budget build.
First thing first, we found our donor bicycle at the local Walmart bike isle sporting all the consummate badges and sales tags one could stick on it. After giving it a once over, we noticed a small one inch scrape on the top tube. Being the savvy shoppers we are, we mentioned it to management. That eye spy moment turned into a $10 discount. Around a 7% right off the top, enough to cover taxes. Not too shabby. So we take our new pride and joy home to really get a better look.
This is what we have to work with.
General Impressions
Overall the bike looks decent. The black and white theme seems to carry well, however Mongoose has seen fit to apply 10 lbs of stickers to the bike. It feels busy as a result of all the safety items and visual effects they saw fit to add to it. It’s a tall frame. If your under 5’ 7” I would be weary. All the safety items are present and it even comes with a manual.

Check out these results of collaboration between NAGASAWA and KASHIMAX . These saddles still have original Kashimax 5 gold shape but with extra padding and with more of a rounded nose for greater comfort. Each 5 gold saddle like this one is handmade in Osaka Japan. You can get this saddle at CHARI & CO NYC. Pick one up before they are all gone because this is probably the only run they will do.
A few months back urban1cycle was brain storming and came up with the idea to bring two different idea’s together.. the fixed gear / single speed scene with vinyl toy world.. Some might not know too much about vinyl toy’s… many companies out there that product high end vinyl toys that I consider art and others do too.. Many big names out there such as Maihiro and Kidrobot.. After looking through Maihiro work, I def got interested and wanted to work together with them.. I contacted Nakanari @ Maihiro, after a few weeks of idea’s being tossed around. He came up with the ninja skitty idea. Then I contaced our boys @ Velocity wheels, who were totally down for the colab… and we got our hands on a sick set of white B43′s.. Here is a sneak peek of the colab… COMING SOON!
Here is a wheel detail of the design..
Charles Alexander Diez, the former North Carolina firefighter who shot cyclist Alan Simons in the head, has been sentenced to four months in jail. Diez pled guilty to shooting Simons during a July 26 roadside confrontation. Said to be upset that Simons was riding his bike with his 3-year-old child, Diez fired his .38 caliber pistol as Simons walked away after the two exchanged words. The bullet struck Simons’ bike helmet, narrowly missing his skull. So let me get this right, you can get years for abusing animals but you can shoot a cyclist and get a slap on your wrist? Wow, just wow. Story via StreetsBlog.
